While feeling sad momentarily is normal in the midst of a big relocation, becoming depressed can have negative consequences. Can Moving Lead to Depression?
We hear about depression on an almost daily basis. It is easily sparked by the ending of a long term relationship or the loss of a loved one or pet, but can moving really cause depression? The answer is blunt: absolutely. Moving is considered one of the most difficult, stressful life events that a person can experience. The stress of getting a move organized, the financial toll that is often involved and the emotions of leaving a familiar place are an overwhelming combination that can easily lead to feelings of depression.
Those who are moving under negative circumstances, such as a divorce, are more likely to develop depression during the move. Leaving family or friends, culture shock, moving to an area with a different climate or weather patterns and even saying goodbye to a home that you have lived in for an extended period may also lead to depression.
