10 Tips to Make Packing a Cinch

The most stressful part of any move is packing. Especially if you’ve been living in the same place for a while, you’ve acquired many things that you now have to organize, pack and transport. Your move will be infinitely easier if you pack smart! Follow these 10 packing tips to make moving your items a breeze.

1. Cover Your Toiletries
When packing things like shampoo, lotion or body wash, use plastic wrap to prevent an explosion. Take the lid off your any bottled item and put plastic wrap over the opening. Screw the lid back on and you’re good to go!

2. Leave Your Dresser Drawers Intact
Why take everything out of your dresser drawers just to put them back in again at your new place? Remove dresser drawers with the contents intact. Cover them with plastic or bubble wrap to keep everything in place. When you get to your new house, your clothes will still be folded and put away.

3. Keep Your Jewelry on the Rack
Jewelry stands are another thing you can wrap in plastic and leave as they are. Don’t take all your necklaces off the rack, just wrap them up and put them in a box.

4. Colour Code Your Boxes
Everyone knows you should label your boxes based on their contents. Why not take it one step further? Buy different colours of duct tape and colour code your boxes based on which room their contents belong in. With just a quick glance at the tape, you’ll know where that box belongs instantly.

5. Hire a Babysitter
On moving day, you have enough to worry about without tending to your children. Put a friend or family member in charge of watching out for your children.

6. Put Glassware in Your Socks
Pack drinking glasses in socks to prevent them from breaking. This has the added benefit of preventing your socks from getting lost in the shuffle.

7. Use Clear Bins for Critical Items
Put all the things you’re going to need first at your new home in clear bins. This will differentiate them from the rest of your items. Make sure you put the clear bins at the edge of the moving truck so you can reach them first.

8. Pack an Overnight Bag
You’re going to be tired after a long day of moving. You may not feel like carrying all the boxes inside your new house, let alone unpacking them. Make sure you have an overnight bad ready so that you don’t have to face unpacking until later.

9. Get Empty Beer Boxes
Visit your local liquor store to get some empty beer boxes. They have handles, making them perfect for transporting heavy items like books, pots and pans.

10. Tie Your Hangers Together
There’s no need to take all your clothes off the hangers and pack them separately. Leave everything on its hanger and tie them together. Put them in a box or garbage bag. You’ll be able to hang things up immediately at your new place.
